The Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible is not a well read book.... This book opens the readers' eyes to the reality that "All is vanity. What do people gain from all the labor at which they toil under the sun?"
In this contemporary climate of global mass job layoffs, home foreclosures and the ultimate destruction of global institutions the question remains open to "what do people gain from all the toil at which they toil under the sun?" In other words what I am implying to you dear reader is this: All the hardship and toil you have done to be successful has perhaps blown up in your face or that career you have tried to be successful at has not brought you to the place of contentment; it has probably brought you to a low grade level of disappointment. Whatever the circumstance life is alive and very unpredictable.
Perhaps the times are teaching us to look at our beliefs and what we hold to be true. I think that a social re-imagining has to take place and the older modes of thinking such as sexism, racism, gender preferences has to be destroyed; just to name a few..... The Book of Ecclesiastes addresses these questions and gives some thought provoking commentary that the reader must assess for themselves.
Before I depart let me leave you with Ecclesiastes 3: 9-15. I hope this will allow some reflection on your part to start!
What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover, he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him.
THAT WHICH IS, ALREADY HAS BEEN; THAT WHICH IS TO BE, ALREADY IS; AND GOD SEEKS OUT WHAT HAS GONE BY.....
